What part of our society should be re-evaluated? Is there anything that we do that should be questioned? OR is it acceptable to live according to customs in order to keep things in order.
There is a reason why customs and traditions are still functioning in our society. The customs and traditions we can find in our society now are a reflection of a person’s, a community’s, and a civilization’s history. On the same note, our customs are not flawless and there are many affairs in our society that should be re-evaluated. For example, many parents still abuse their children when their children can not fulfill their expectations. This is a custom that began centuries ago, but people in our society are beginning to realize that it is not appropriate and are questioning their own actions. Furthermore, a hot topic in the media recently is about death sentences. Surprisingly, in other countries and communities, death penalties are still intact. In places such as Texas and
In our community, I believe we should be questioning an issue which is less severe than death, but also an important subject in our society. It is a custom and expectation in many families that children must attend university. I, myself, believe that university is right route for me, but is it the “right way to go” for everyone? Many teenagers find themselves in a predicament and under a great deal of stress because they question whether or not university is the right path for them. Not only families give pressure to their children about attending university, but the media and often a child’s own peers also pressure them. I believe it is time our society questions and re-evaluates this custom and tradition. Is going to university still the only “right way to go”?
University is not the only "right way to go." Someone with excellent 'skills' may have a career without attending university. For example, "X" has excellent communication skills and a medical background."X" just finished secondary school. However, "X" has skills that are recognized by some fancy company, and they hire "X". Therefore, "X" might be a psychiatrist.

ps. One can try their luck with lotteries. But they have to know the limit.
I don't get what's so wrong about the death penalty. It serves the same purpose as a jail sentence except you can't buy yourself out of a death sentence and that some jails are actually quite livable and don't seem to be a punishment at all.
ReplyDeleteI think the death sentence is wrong in the sense that it contradicts itself .. killing someone as a punishment for them killing others ..
ReplyDeleteBut I agree with you, Timothy, I think it's the same as a jail sentence.
For some people, a jail sentence is probably worse than death, if they go mentally insane in jail or something.
Death sentence is a good alternative if

2. Jailing may be too expernsive.
3. If the planet is over populated.

Cultures are often forgotten the moment the race is to die out or move on. Preserving the lives and the well being may be better than to prevent any additional influences on certain cultures as we will be preventing the natural evolution of cultures as well.
We live in a progressive society where we believe the solution of wrongdoing is not punishment but rehabilitation. The wrongdoer will learn from his rehabilitation, not punishment.
ReplyDeleteI have a question for you Jisong, If you were the citizens of a third world rogue state (country), would you rather be sanctioned or go to war against the superior international alliance opposing you?
Adeline, you have noticed the classic paradox Timothy had put forward! Good analysis!
ReplyDeleteThanks Steven, but my name's not Adeline..
ReplyDeleteDepends. If life is just absolutely boring, I will choose the war or immigration.
