The Lottery Evaluation

What part of our society should be re-evaluated? Is there anything that we do that should be questioned? OR is it acceptable to live according to customs in order to keep things in order.

Some traditions and rules are necessary to keep our society safe for people to live in. The laws set up by the government are a crucial part to maintaining a safe and clean environment. Along with these laws, I believe people who break these laws deserve to face the consequences, such as serving time or paying a fine, but one part of society that should be re-evaluated is the death penalty. Many parts of the world have already chosen to get rid of the death penalty for serious criminals, but others have not. The death penalty is a bad way of punishment because it contradicts the law set up by the authorities. Murder is illegal. How is death as a punishment any different than murder? It is not. The death penalty is just like murder because it involves killing someone, who may not be a model citizen, but is still a person with rights. I understand that in order to be sentenced to the death penalty, the criminal must have done a very bad deed, but there are other ways of punishment that does not involve such a inhuman action. Life sentence to jail or a certain amount of years without early probation is a more suitable punishment. Just like the lottery in the short story, The Lottery, the death penalty should be re-evaluated and if possible, should be exterminated.

  1. I did not believe in death penalty because of the chance of killing someone innocent. But later, DNA tests became universal, which greatly reduces the chance of executing someone innocent, therefore yes, it is a some what a good idea.

  2. In fact, in more populated countries, they don't even have enough prisons to keep criminals alive....

  3. Also there are some sentences that go on for longer than the criminals remaining lifespan. I think neither the death penalty nor jail help to punish the criminal. I think that these are only ways that the government or people in charge use to get rid of people that would otherwise topple the delicate balance of society.

Also I have a question for you. Should you punish someone for doing something that in our eyes is immoral or wrong but in his eyes is perfectly okay?

  4. Timothy, we must punish those who are immoral or wrong in our eyes because they are of great harm in our current society. However, this is very relative to the central government. For example, in the story "Logan's Run," humans are born via artificially and die at age thirty to end seniority. To us, it is immoral to kill someone who lived past age thirty, but is indeed immoral to the central government of "Logan's Run" to live paet age thirty. So Timothy, you have asked an important question.

  6. The question remains that is punishment here to correct someone or is it here to take revenge on them for all the evil deeds they unleashed on our society?

  7. Yes that question. I believe that I side with the those who say that they are jailing people to "get rid" of them.

  8. So we are jailing away people whom has made mistakes?

  9. Yes we are. We are jailing them to remove them from society because they are a "nuisance" to the public eye. Something like jail is completely unable to punish or rehabilitate someone. You've probably heard of them, people that have gotten out of jail immediately commit a crime to put themselves back in. Why? Because if they've lived most of their life in jail, then it would be frightening coming out into society where nothing is guaranteed and you start with black mark in your record that everyone knows about.

  10. The whole point of jail is to punish and make criminals pay the consequences for their wrong doings and actions. Rules are made by the society as a whole because we have a democratic government. The rules make sure society is safe and smooth and breakers of these rules need to be sent to jail. Jail isnt for revenge, its just a necessary punishment because if there were no consequences to peoples actions, our nation and our society would be 'unlivable' ...

  11. So the society is a revengeous monster that punishes the people for every tiny mistake that was made. Just like our parents, they will punish us because what we did pissed them off and they want to take revenge. I can not help but to be sarcastic.
