The significance of Old Man Warner bringing up the “young folks” is that the next generations are the ones who will decide the future. Old Man Warner having lived for more than half a century, knows it's time for the younger ones to take over the tradition of the “Lottery.” However, in his opinion, young people are constantly looking for newer and more advanced life styles. Firstly, I believe this is the correct way to go. If people never advance and move forward, the society would always be the same. It is up to the future generations to replace the modern society. Most importantly, they need to learn and improve from it and not revolve around an out-dated society. Secondly, Old Man Warner is too biased about his tradition. In a sense, he seems brain-washed. How can stoning a person be acceptable? For example, when Mary was being stoned, someone gave her son a stone. How generous of that person to give the boy a stone that he can throw at to kill his mother. That person acted like it was an everyday task. Only then, did someone realize the wrong doing of this tradition and it was the victim's son. He was just a child around five years old, even he knew this is wrong. It's always when the consequences have occurred before people realize what they are doing. Inevitably, Old Man Warner is not the only person who is brain-washed, aside from the fact that he has lived his life through the tradition. In the story it says, “in the north village they're talking of giving up the lottery,” The person who had that idea must have been the a genius. It was the century's most ingenious decision. That person deserves the Nobel Prize Award. It must have been the newer generations who have FINALLY realized it is wrong to stone people to death. That person deserves the Nobel Prize Award. Lastly, Old Man Warner's concerns do have a point and should not be neglected. Young people are too influential these days. They can't make the right decisions themselves and are persuaded too easily. For example, there are teenagers who are persuaded to take drugs or decide to hang out with friends everyday rather than attending school. Also, why do you think there are restrictions for people under the age of 18? It is to prevent the immature decisions made by them. Imagine what would happen if a teenager went to vote and persuaded all his friends to vote for the same candidate, who is completely useless. Alternatively, candidates can bribe teenagers who have no self-control over their decisions. Again, these people are the ones who will decide the fate of our society. That is why Old Man Warner believes the young people are unreliable.

Well stated Gordon! However, out-dated practices are not evil or obsolete. Music is not evil and war is still evidently present. But to humans, we strongly reject what we believe as morally or politically incorrect.
ReplyDeleteThere are no natural restrictions, but artificial restrictions because the restrictions are established by law, so it is the decision of law that determines why we cannot vote under age 18.
Wow. You talk about how Old Man Warner is very biased. But what you fail to realize is that your response is full of bias. It's not okay to stone people? How is that not completely biased? Dying and Killing are natural ways for the world to control population all the more so now that our population is so large. Being top consumers, there are no other animals that mainly hunt us so and so many other reasons have caused our population to reach this point. So it is very logical to find a way to control the existing population. They just happening to use stoning.
ReplyDeleteAlso you strongly mention that you disagree with stoning, but how is that any different from abortion? In both methods a life is killed, it's just in abortion the life being smothered doesn't always look human and has yet to make memories or an opinion. And in the Lottery one person is chosen randomly every year and lots of people can get abortions whenever they want. Going by this, abortions are a hell lot more cruel than stoning.
By the way, you mentioned that all of them are somewhat brainwashed, but going by that logical everyone is brainwashed. No one magically forms their own opinion, all of it is manifested through the things that we see, what we grow up with, and the people we know. So going by your logic that means that everyone in this world is brainwashed.
Your argument is very one-sided. You should try and think about why they thought that the Lottery was okay before you go about criticizing them. All I can see in this is bashing.
he doesnt care...
ReplyDeleteBut if you wish to argue from a biological point of view, we are actually the prey. But through years of evolution, we developed the ability to defend ourselves with tools instead of merely brutal strength-a triumph of intelligence over savageness of early prehistoric creatures. Even then, we will still be steaming beef if we are to be tossed into a pit of lions without any protection on. And last of all, ideas can be magically formed. Where do you think those natural instincts came from? How do you think life formed? Where do you think the first piece of music came from? How do you think people first realize the need to make fire or to cook?
ReplyDeleteBy the way, if he is to win an award, that will be Nobel Peace Award which has nothing to do with being smart...
ReplyDeleteDo you believe it is fair for a teenager to be charged with adult sentences but be always treated as a teenager? Do you believe that is fair?
ReplyDeleteDo you believe that there is a huge difference between someone who is 17 and someone who is 18?
Who started World Wars, Iraq Wars, Vietnam War? The adults or the teenagers?
Who built the nuclear warheads that are stored across continents? The teenagers?
Who voted for Steven Harper?
Who voted for George Bush?
Who are voting and making mistakes?
Who are influenced by the media and their peers and cast their votes?
All those points about teenagers are easily influenced, bribed, etc to cast the wrong votes are all rumours. They are not at all important.
As no teenager alive in this world has ever casted a vote.
Darn, my profile image failed to show.
